Members of the Fulani community in Kwara state on Saturday denounced the endorsement of President Muhammadu Buhari by some of their kinsmen in Abuja, insisting that their allegiance remains only with the Senate President and national leader of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Dr Abubakar Bukola Saraki.
Addressing newsmen in Ilorin, the state capital, the leaders of the community said it was too late for them to desert Saraki whom they noted had been of greater assistance to them over the years.
Members of the union had on Friday visited Saraki at his Iloffa GRA residence in Ilorin where they pledged their allegiance to him and assured that they will deliver their votes 100 percent to the PDP during next year’s general elections.
The spokesman for the Fulani community in Kwara, Alhaji Ahmed Abubakar condemned the purported endorsement of Buhari, saying those behind the decision were unknown to the Fulani people of Kwara.
He said: “We learn that some people went to Abuja to speak about endorsing someone, we dont know any of them, we dont know about it. We dont know any other person than Saraki. He is the only one we know here because he is the only one who has been providing for us.”
Asked what could be done to the people who endorsed Buhari if they were not truly representing them, Abubakar said the people were actually strangers to the Fulani community of Kwara and as such there is the need to first identify them before deciding on appropriate measures to deal with them.
He said: “None of our people sent anyone to represent us, I am very conversant with the Fulani community in all the 16 local government areas of this state because I go to visit them regularly and so I know them. Therefore I know that those who spoke in Abuja were not our people, we did not send anybody.
“Bukola Saraki has been doing a lot for us, he has facilitated many amenities for us in our various settlements so we are with him and no other person.”
